+## Dotfiles management
+
+Any changes to dotfiles (shell configs, app configs, scripts, etc. that live
+under `~/.dotfiles`) must be made by editing the files inside the
+`~/.dotfiles` repo itself, NOT by editing the symlinked target files in place.
+
+- `~/.dotfiles` uses a symlink system (see `link.sh` / `link-root.sh`) to
+  link its contents into their expected locations (e.g. `~/.config/*`,
+  `~/.vimrc`, etc.).
+- Always locate and edit the source file under `~/.dotfiles`, then verify
+  the symlink is in place (run `~/.dotfiles/link.sh` if a new file needs to
